If you've looked at supplement labels recently, you've probably noticed ashwagandha appearing in everything from protein powders to sleep supplements to pre-workouts. You've also probably noticed that some labels say KSM-66 and some just say ashwagandha extract.
They're not the same thing. The difference matters more than most brands want to admit.
What is ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha — Withania somnifera — is an adaptogenic herb from Ayurvedic medicine used for over 3,000 years. The name translates roughly as "smell of horse" — a reference to both the root's smell and the belief that it conferred horse-like strength and stamina.
The bioactive compounds are withanolides — a group of steroidal lactones concentrated primarily in the root. These are what the research on ashwagandha's cortisol-lowering, stress-reducing and performance-supporting effects is based on.
What is KSM-66?
KSM-66 is a specific branded extract of ashwagandha root, developed by Ixoreal Biomed over 14 years of research. It's produced using an extraction process based on traditional milk extraction methods, without using alcohol or synthetic solvents.
The result is a full-spectrum root extract standardised to a minimum 5% withanolide content — the highest concentration available from a root-only extract.
Why the distinction matters
Standard ashwagandha extracts are inconsistent. Withanolide content varies between 1-5% depending on source, season and extraction method. Many products use whole root powder with minimal standardisation — you're getting something, but not reliably the research-supported dose.
KSM-66 is consistent. It's the most clinically studied form of ashwagandha in existence, with over 24 published human clinical trials behind it. When a study on ashwagandha shows meaningful results, there's a reasonable chance it used KSM-66.
What the research shows
A 2012 study in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine found that 300mg of KSM-66 twice daily significantly reduced cortisol levels and stress scores in chronically stressed adults over 60 days compared to placebo.
A 2015 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found KSM-66 improved muscle strength, recovery, and testosterone levels in resistance-trained men.
A 2021 study found meaningful improvements in sleep quality and morning alertness with KSM-66 supplementation — the cortisol-lowering mechanism directly supports the sleep-stress loop.
The cortisol connection
Cortisol is your primary stress hormone. In short bursts it's useful — it sharpens focus, mobilises energy, drives performance under pressure. In chronic low-grade elevation, it impairs memory consolidation, disrupts sleep, promotes fat storage and suppresses immune function.
Most high-performing people have chronically elevated cortisol. Not from acute stress but from sustained demand — long days, training, business pressure, insufficient recovery.
KSM-66 at 300mg daily measurably reduces cortisol. Not by blunting your stress response entirely, but by supporting your HPA axis — the hormonal system that regulates stress — in returning to baseline more efficiently after activation.
The practical result: you respond to pressure normally but recover from it faster. Less residual activation. Better sleep. Better performance the following day.
Why 300mg specifically
NO CRASH contains 300mg of KSM-66 per serving — the dose used in the majority of clinical trials. Not 100mg included for label purposes. Not 600mg because more looks impressive. 300mg because that's what the research supports.
Combined with Lion's Mane for cognitive support, Reishi for nervous system regulation, and Cordyceps for physical endurance, KSM-66 completes the stress-performance-recovery system in a single daily ritual.
Hot or iced. Third-party tested. As featured in Men's Health.
