Functional Mushrooms 101: What Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga and Reishi Actually Do

NO CRASH functional mushroom chocolate drink - the full two-layer formula

Functional mushrooms are mushrooms used for what they do rather than how they taste: Lion's Mane for cognitive support, Cordyceps for physical energy, Chaga for antioxidants, Reishi for calm. Every serving of NO CRASH contains all four as concentrated fruiting body extracts (4,000mg combined), alongside three adaptogens and a vitamin foundation of B12, B6, D3 and K2. This is the plain-English guide to what each one is, what the studies actually suggest, and why the blend is built in two layers.

What are functional mushrooms?

Functional mushrooms are species with a long history of traditional use that modern research has started to examine properly. They are not culinary mushrooms, and they are absolutely not psychedelic. Think of them as botanicals that happen to be fungi.

One honest note before we start: the research is promising but young. Some ingredients have solid human trials behind them. Others are mostly supported by lab and animal studies. We will tell you which is which, because that is the difference between a brand you can trust and a label full of buzzwords.

What does Lion's Mane do?

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is the cognitive one. It contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which in lab studies stimulate production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein involved in the maintenance and growth of neurons.

In one of the better-known human trials, a 16-week double-blind study in older Japanese adults, the group taking Lion's Mane scored measurably higher on cognitive function tests than placebo, with scores declining again after they stopped (Mori et al., 2009). Small study, but a proper one: randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled.

NO CRASH uses 1,000mg of an 8:1 fruiting body extract per serving, which is the equivalent of 8,000mg of raw mushroom.

What does Cordyceps do?

Cordyceps is the physical energy one. Research has focused on oxygen utilisation and exercise tolerance, with some trials in older adults showing improvements in VO2 max and time to exhaustion. It is the reason NO CRASH works as a pre-training drink and not just a desk drink.

We wrote a full breakdown of the endurance research here: Cordyceps and VO2 max: what the studies show.

Per serving: 1,000mg of an 8:1 fruiting body extract.

What does Chaga do?

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is the antioxidant one. It grows on birch trees in cold climates and has one of the highest antioxidant concentrations of any natural source studied.

Full transparency: most Chaga research so far is preclinical, meaning lab and animal studies rather than large human trials. The antioxidant content is well documented; the downstream benefits in humans are still being mapped. We include it because the traditional use case and the early data both point the same way, but we will not pretend the human evidence is further along than it is.

Per serving: 1,000mg of a 10:1 fruiting body extract.

What does Reishi do?

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is the calm one. Known in traditional Chinese medicine as the "mushroom of immortality", modern research has looked at it mainly for fatigue, sleep quality and general wellbeing, mostly in small human trials with encouraging but early results.

In the NO CRASH blend, Reishi is there to keep the energy smooth rather than wired. It is also why the caffeine-free Pure Calm version works as an evening drink.

Per serving: 1,000mg of a 4:1 fruiting body extract.

Why are there adaptogens in the blend too?

Mushrooms give you the targeted effects. Adaptogens manage the thing that undermines all of them: stress.

KSM-66 Ashwagandha (300mg, 5% withanolides). The most-studied ashwagandha extract in the world. In a 60-day randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults taking it showed a roughly 28% reduction in serum cortisol versus placebo, alongside significant reductions in reported stress (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012). Cortisol matters because caffeine raises it, heat raises it, and deadlines raise it. Managing it is what separates regulation from stimulation.

Rhodiola Rosea (25mg, 3% rosavins). Studied mainly for mental fatigue, with trial results suggesting improved concentration under stress and reduced burnout symptoms.

Maca Root (250mg, 10:1 extract). A Peruvian root traditionally used for stamina and energy, with early human research on mood and energy levels.

Why does NO CRASH include vitamins?

Because the functional layer cannot perform on an empty foundation. B12 and B6 are directly involved in the pathways your body uses to produce energy and neurotransmitters. D3 supports normal muscle and immune function, and most people in the UK are low on it for half the year. K2 works alongside D3.

That is the two-layer system: vitamins support the system, mushrooms and adaptogens optimise it.

Ingredient Per serving (8g) What the studies suggest
Lion's Mane (8:1 extract) 1,000mg Cognitive function, NGF support (human RCT)
Chaga (10:1 extract) 1,000mg Antioxidant content (mostly preclinical)
Cordyceps (8:1 extract) 1,000mg Oxygen utilisation, exercise tolerance (small human trials)
Reishi (4:1 extract) 1,000mg Calm, sleep quality, fatigue (early human trials)
KSM-66 Ashwagandha 300mg Cortisol and stress reduction (human RCT)
Maca Root (10:1 extract) 250mg Energy and mood (early human research)
Rhodiola Rosea (3% rosavins) 25mg Mental fatigue, focus under stress (human trials)
Vitamins B12, B6, D3, K2 500mcg / 10mg / 50mcg / 100mcg Foundation: energy metabolism, nervous and immune function

Total functional actives: 8,625mg per serving, in chocolate, with 30 calories, no sugar, and either 50mg of natural caffeine (Steady Energy) or none at all (Pure Calm).

Frequently asked questions

Do functional mushrooms taste like mushrooms?

No. Concentrated extracts are earthy on their own, which is exactly why NO CRASH is built on real cocoa. It tastes like a proper chocolate drink, hot or iced.

Is there caffeine in NO CRASH?

Steady Energy contains 50mg of natural caffeine, roughly half a cup of coffee, designed to work with the adaptogens rather than against them. Pure Calm is completely caffeine-free. If you want to understand why coffee alone leaves you flat by 3pm, read why you crash after coffee.

How long until I notice anything?

The caffeine and the ritual you feel on day one. The mushroom and adaptogen research is based on consistent daily use, typically over 4 to 8 weeks in the trials above. This is a daily practice, not a shot of espresso.

Are extracts better than mushroom powder?

Yes, meaningfully. NO CRASH uses fruiting body extracts at ratios of 4:1 to 10:1, so 1,000mg of extract represents several times that in raw mushroom. Cheaper products often use ground mycelium on grain, which is mostly starch.

Can I drink it cold?

Yes. Dissolve in a little hot water first, then pour over ice. The full method is in our Pikes Ibiza iced recipe.

Your foundation. Not your replacement.

Four mushrooms, three adaptogens and the vitamin foundation that lets them work. In chocolate.
